BioControl, Inc. was established and incorporated in 1981 to manage the consulting and other extracurricular business activities of Dr. Byron S. Tepper. At that time Dr. Tepper was the Director of the Office of Safety and Environmental Health of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine, Hygiene and Arts and Sciences. Dr. Tepper is a microbiologist who entered the field of biosafety after 15 years of research on leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (FAAM). He has been engaged in all aspects of general safety and environmental health since 1974.
Dr. Tepper has been a member of the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University since 1960. He has held appointments in the Department of Pathobiology and Environmental Health Sciences in the JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health and as Assistant Professor of Occupational Medicine in the JHU School of Medicine. 
Dr. Tepper is a Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) and a retired Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with more than 30 years experience in biosafety, occupational safety, and environmental health. He is a charter member and Past-President of the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA) and Past-President of the Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association (ChABSA). In 1998, Dr. Tepper was presented ABSA’s Arnold G. Wedum Distinguished Achievement Award. He is a Past-President of the Campus Safety Health & Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA). In 2002, Dr. Tepper received the National Safety Council and CSHEMA Honorary Life Membership. 
Dr. Tepper developed and continually directed the course “Control of Biohazards in the Research Laboratory” since its start in 1980 This course is now sponsored and presented by BioControl at least annually in Baltimore area and by contract to academic and industrial organizations. 
Dr. Tepper is currently the CEO of BioControl, Inc. With associates, BioControl provides consultation in environmental health and safety specializing in biosafety, laboratory design, laboratory and hospital safety, and general safety training as well as the biosafety training. BioControl also provides service as biosafety officer for emerging biotech companies and can serve as “outside expert” on Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBC) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC).
